It started with the Woodstock Aquatic Center.
Back in 1996, as the Olympic Games came to Atlanta, the Olympic Committee recognized the need for additional training facilities for incoming international teams. Pat and Beth Murphy, founders of Chattahoochee Gold, were inspired by the excitement and spirit surrounding the Games and committed themselves to helping make it happen.
The Woodstock community rallied behind the vision in an incredible way. A local bank helped secure financing, the City of Woodstock leased an acre of land, and the original pool was constructed in just 60 days. The paint was still drying when the Belarusian Olympic Team arrived to train. For two unforgettable weeks, athletes trained in Woodstock and stayed with local families, creating a legacy of community, hospitality, and excellence in the water that still defines us today.
From those beginnings, the program continued to grow into one of the area’s premier competitive swim teams. Over the years, Chattahoochee Gold expanded across multiple locations throughout North Georgia while remaining deeply committed to developing swimmers of all ages and abilities.
As our organizations have continued to grow, Gold Swim School and Chattahoochee Gold Swim Team have officially separated into two independently owned organizations.
Gold Swim School, owned and operated by the Murphy family, will continue focusing on swim lessons, water safety, and learn-to-swim programming and is currently in the process of building a brand-new dedicated facility of its own. Gold Swim School will continue offering group lessons, water aerobics, Camp Splash!, birthday parties, and additional community aquatic programming designed to make swimming accessible for all ages and abilities. Chattahoochee Gold Swim Team, owned by Mike Wardwell, continues its focus on competitive swimming development and has transitioned its team operations to Cherokee Aquatic Center as part of its next chapter of growth. As part of these exciting changes, both organizations will eventually transition out of the original Woodstock location that has meant so much to so many families over the years. While the facilities may evolve, the shared mission of building confident swimmers, fostering community, and creating lifelong memories in the water remains stronger than ever.
We are incredibly grateful to the families, swimmers, coaches, and community members who have supported these programs throughout the years and are excited for what the future holds for both organizations.
