Frequently Asked Questions About Evaluations
How do I know if my child is ready for swim team?
At Gold Swim Team, readiness for swim team is based on both confidence in the water and the ability to safely complete legal strokes independently. As a general guideline, swimmers should be able to complete the following without assistance (1 lap = 25 yards):
10 Years & Under
- 1 lap of freestyle
- 1 lap of backstroke
11–12 Years
- 1 lap of freestyle
- 1 lap of backstroke
- 1 lap of either breaststroke or butterfly
13 Years & Up
* 1 lap of freestyle
* 1 lap of backstroke
* 1 lap of breaststroke
* 1 lap of butterfly
If your swimmer is close but not quite there yet, that is completely okay! Many swimmers continue building endurance, technique, and confidence through lessons before making the transition to team.
For swimmers who are not quite swim team ready yet, we highly recommend our associated swim lesson program, Gold Swim School. Gold Swim School focuses on stroke development, endurance, confidence, and technique progression to help prepare swimmers for a successful transition into competitive swimming.
Not sure if your swimmer is ready? Our coaching staff is always happy to help evaluate your swimmer’s current skill level and recommend the best next step for their long-term success in the water.
What happens during the evaluation?
During the 10-minute evaluation, our coaches will assess your swimmer's comfort level in the water, basic skills, and stroke technique if applicable. We’ll determine the best program and group placement based on their abilities. Then they will speak with you about group and practice options as well as answer any additional questions you have.
What should my swimmer wear?
Swimmers should wear a comfortable swimsuit (one-piece for girls, jammers or briefs for boys), bring goggles, and a towel. Swim caps are recommended but not required.
How long does the evaluation take?
10 minutes in the water. Please arrive 5 minutes early to check in.
Do I have to sign up for an evaluation timeslot?
Yes. Above click which location is your preferred evaluation location. Then fill out the form and select your evaluation date and time. You will receive a 24 hour email reminder.
How much does an evaluation cost?
It's free!
What age groups do you accept?
We offer programs for swimmers ages 5–18, from intermediate to competitive athletes for the swim team. If your child is a beginner (cannot swim a lap of freestyle and a lap of backstroke), we would recommend swim lessons at our associated Swim Lesson Program, Gold Swim School based in Woodstock, GA.
What if my child is nervous about the evaluation?
Our coaches are experienced in working with swimmers of all comfort levels. The evaluation is low-pressure and supportive. Parents are encouraged to stay and watch.
What happens after the evaluation?
Our admin will send you an email to register. We recommend reading the email thouroughly before reaching out with questions.
