OUR SWIM GROUP STRUCTURE
Built for Long-Term Development
At Chattahoochee Gold, our training structure is designed with one goal in mind: helping every swimmer progress in the right environment at the right time.
Swimming has evolved significantly over the years. Training methods have advanced, athlete development has changed, and swimmers grow physically and mentally at different rates than they did even a decade ago. As a program, we’ve evolved alongside the sport to better support today’s athletes and families.
Our updated group structure reflects that evolution—creating clearer pathways for development while maintaining the high standard of coaching and athlete care our families expect.
Every group within our program is intentional, developmentally appropriate, and designed to challenge swimmers while building confidence, technique, and long-term success.
How Our Program Is Structured
Our groups are organized by both age and developmental level, allowing coaches to provide more focused training and individualized attention.
Elementary School (10 & Under)
White 1 • White 2 • White 3
These groups focus on building strong technical foundations, introducing competitive swimming concepts, and developing confidence, consistency, and love for the sport.
Middle School (11–12)
Yellow 1 • Yellow 2 • Yellow 3
Swimmers continue refining technique while increasing endurance, race understanding, and training habits in a more structured competitive environment.
Middle School (13–14)
Black 1 • Black 2 • Black 3
These groups emphasize higher-level training, race strategy, accountability, and preparation for advanced competition and championship-level swimming.
High School (15 & Over)
National • Senior 1 • Senior 2• Senior 3
Our senior-level groups are designed for committed athletes pursuing high-level competition, long-term athletic development, and continued success in and out of the pool.
Why Smaller Development Ranges Matter
Within each level, groups are intentionally designed to narrow the range of ability and experience.
This allows coaches to:
- Provide more individualized instruction
- Create appropriate training challenges
- Foster stronger team dynamics
- Support swimmers at their current stage of development
- Better prepare athletes for future progression
Whether a swimmer is just beginning their competitive journey or preparing for elite-level competition, our structure allows us to meet them where they are and help them continue moving forward.
How Placement & Group Movement Work
Group placement is based on a combination of factors and is never determined by age alone.
Our coaching staff evaluates swimmers using:
- Attendance and consistency
- Training habits and coachability
- Physical and emotional maturity
- Performance progression
- USA Swimming Power Points
- Overall coach evaluation and judgment
Most importantly, placements are made with the swimmer’s long-term development in mind.
Movement between groups is individualized. Some swimmers may progress quickly, while others benefit from additional time building confidence and consistency within a level. Development is not linear, and every athlete’s path will look different.
Understanding USA Swimming Power Points
USA Swimming Power Points are one of several tools we use to help evaluate swimmer development and performance progression.
In simple terms, Power Points compare a swimmer’s times to national age-group standards. Faster and more competitive performances earn higher scores.
Power Points help coaches:
- Compare performances across events and strokes
- Measure improvement over time
- Understand how swimmers compare nationally within their age group
- Assist in appropriate group placement
While Power Points are helpful, they are only one piece of the evaluation process—not the sole deciding factor.
Expectations at Higher Levels
As swimmers progress into advanced training groups, expectations naturally increase—particularly in attendance, consistency, and commitment.
Attendance Expectations
- Black 1: Approximately 80% attendance
- Senior 1: Approximately 85% attendance
- National: Approximately 90% attendance
These standards help prepare athletes for the physical and mental demands of higher-level competition while reinforcing consistency and accountability.
What This Means for Your Swimmer
Our group structure is not about labels—it’s about opportunity.
Every level within Chattahoochee Gold serves a purpose in the long-term development of the athlete. The goal is always to place swimmers in the environment where they can grow, be challenged appropriately, and experience success.
Progress looks different for every swimmer, and there is no single timeline for development. Our coaches are committed to guiding that process with intentional training, thoughtful placement, and individualized support every step of the way.
All coaches are USA Swimming–certified and background-checked.
